A stroboscope lamp for setting the ignition angle is used to check and adjust the ignition timing of gasoline engines. Proper setting of the ignition timing as per the engine manufacturer's recommendations ensures that the full engine power is achieved with a minimum specific fuel consumption.

The engine manufacturer specifies the moment of ignition by specifying the ignition angle in degrees relative to the upper dead center point (GMP) of the position of the piston in the cylinder. Usually, this is a few degrees before GMP. A comparison of the graduated scale on the clutch housing with the mark applied to the clutch flywheel in the light of the stroboscopic lamp allows to determine the ignition advance angle during the engine operation.
